Minimal contact personal safety training

Why do I need this?

This course is suited to individuals who wish to understand more about personal safety using minimal contact techniques. 

This is suitable for individuals who work or volunteer in a care environment, children’s homes, schools and colleges, hospitality, lone workers, event stewards and all public-facing services, activities and events where you may face a risk of conflict.  

What should I know first?

This training is offered as a stand-alone one-day course and no previous qualifications are necessary. Our instructors have more than 20 years experience of training self protection and defence techniques and are fully accredited by HM Government.

What will I learn?

Learners will develop skills and knowledge when dealing with a variety of situations where self protection may be necessary. You will learn how to protect yourself by understanding situational awareness, safer body positioning and identifying exits within a close or closed area, maintaining minimal reaction distances, avoiding conflict using de-escalation, simple breakaway  and techniques.

Subjects covered:

Theory

  • Managing conflict through communication
  • Medical implications

Practical

  • Reasoning and negotiation skills
  • Body language and positioning
  • Utilising your environment
  • Understanding reaction distances and personal zones
  • Effective stance and posture
  • Upper body breakaway techniques including:
  • Handshake and grab releases
  • Single and double-handed arm, shoulder and wrist releases
  • Escape from hair pull, grab, bite, choke or strangle holds
  • Defence against head, punch, knee, kick

Course assessment:

Learners will be assessed through oral questioning and practical demonstrations. Scenarios will be set to enable a learner to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills. The assessment will be ongoing throughout the course.

Learners should be made aware of the physical aspect of this training, so all should be physically fit to carry out the training.

Course is suited to:

Available to learners aged 18 or over. This training involves physical participation and contact with other learners will be necessary for assessment purposes. Learners will be instructed to complete a gentle warm up at the beginning of each session. This course may be adapted for participants with limited mobility. Course outcome:

This course will provide learners with the ability to recognise when de-escalation techniques are helpful, how to utilise the environment for self safety along with the confidence to apply appropriate self protection techniques when necessary. Learners will gain a solid understanding of self protection with minimal contact along with an attendance certificate issued by United Safe Care.
